Akkanut Wantanasombut, gave an interview to the Channel NewsAsia (CNA)

On March 2, 2021, Akkanut Wantanasombut, the researcher of the Mekong Studies Center, Institute of Asian Studies, gave an interview to the Channel NewsAsia (CNA) –news television channel headquartered in Queenstown, Singapore analyzed the role of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) toward the military coup in Myanmar in response of growing concern the effectiveness of outside pressures to change the policies of the ruling junta. Regarding ASEAN is a consensus-based decision-making organization, he emphasized that ASEAN will be very be careful when it comes to the official statement. Since ASEAN’s dilemma is to preserve regional stability through a policy of non-interference, so ASEAN can still play a crucial role in Myanmar crisis, but it is not in the same way as other organizations. Finally, he pointed out that ASEAN norms would be an important factor in determining Myanmar’s path forward.
