Background

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development defines 5 principles of Sustainable Development Goals which includes : people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. This reflects the concern of many parties about these days imbalanced development. Sustainable development has become the issue of the world since early 1990s. It is a broad term from which Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was formulated and worked upon for 15 years. In 2015, the new target has been drafted up, Sustainable Development Goals. It becomes the new framework that the world community will move towards until the year 2030.  SDGs is composed of 17 targets which already integrate economics, social and environmental aspects of development together. The integral character of SDGs targets evidently illustrates complexity of the issue, both the complexity of the problems and the complexity in coordination of problem eliminating measures. In order to effectively tackle the problems, concerted effort of every party must be conducted. The SDGs magnifies the picture of human relationships at the global level.

Japan -Thailand relations reflects this picture. Our 130 years of diplomatic relations shine the light to our longer relationship that had begun even before the official relations. In the world of power politics and polarization, our political and economic relations have been the focal points of interest. Our relationship has gone through several up and down phases. While the issue of SDGs made us re-investigate our common concern, such as, poverty, natural resource depletion, and environmental degradation. Our excessive production and consumption behavior created imbalanced development. It adorns to us that not only Japan and Thailand, but this whole region is sharing the same situation. Japan and ASEAN are no longer donor and recipient countries, but partnership in our future development.

For the occasion of 130th anniversary of Japan-Thailand diplomatic relations, it should be a good opportunity that we re-visit some of our regional concerns with the hope that discussion among academic circle could set motion for further implementation.
